A Study of Factors Influencing Depressive Symptoms and Suicidal Ideation among Elderly in a Small and Medium-Sized City

Abstract

|
|
Objectives : This study was aimed to investigate the prevalence of depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation and to analyze the factors influencing on depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation.
Methods : 300 data among the elderly over 65 years old were analyzed. Geriatric Depression Scale Short Form-Korean (GDSSF-K), Scale for Suicidal Ideation (SSI), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Scale of Social Support (SSS), Brief Encounter Psychosocial Instrument (BEPSI-K) were used to evaluate. We compared depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation among multiple factors and analyzed multiple regression with depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation as criterion variables.
Results : The prevalence of depressive symptoms in elderly was 22% and suicidal ideation was 16.6%. There were differences about the depressive symptoms figuring out from sex (p£¼.01), education (p£¼.05), marital status (p£¼ .05), sleep (p£¼.05). Depressive symptoms have relation with self-esteem (r=-.588, p£¼.01), stress (r=.522, p£¼.01) and social-support (r=-.508, p£¼.01). These are explained 45.7% of the depressive symptoms. There were differences in suicidal ideation according to marital status (p£¼.05), medical insurance (p£¼.05). Suicidal ideation was related to self-esteem (r=-.467, p£¼.01), depressive symptoms (r=.482, p£¼.01) and stress (r=.435, p£¼.01). These factors accounted for 30.3% of suicidal ideation.
Conclusion : These results showed that the most important variable influencing on depressive symptoms was self-esteem and influencing on suicidal ideation was depressive symp-toms.
